Vancouver Alternative Fashion Week[End] provides Vancouver’s wildly explosive underground arts scene with a unique departure from typical arts affairs. This three-day event boasts over 50 jury-selected artists, musicians, performers and designers, in a celebration and promotion of unbridled creativity. VALT encompasses wearable art, music (from solo musicians to full contemporary bands to electronic artists), drawing, painting, mixed-media works, sculpture, film (documentary, art film and narrative), performance art (from short theatrical works, to interpretive dance and beyond), photography and interactive installations.
#VALT2014 Theme: Vicissitudes [vi-sis-i-tood] noun
1. a change or variation occurring in the course of something.
2. interchange or alternation, as of states or thing.
3. successive, alternating, or changing phases or conditions, as of life or fortune.
4. regular change or succession of one state or thing to another.
5. change; mutation; mutability; ups and downs.
Our theme is broken into three parts for our three consecutive nights:
Fri. Nov. 21st: reVolution, a method of social change involving aggression and militant action – when there is no other option but for change to occur. This is the path that is ever-remembered in historical texts, because it is loud, fast and impossible to ignore.
Sat. Nov. 22nd: eVolution refers to a more natural form of change, based on a slow and steady change of genetics, natural order, and environments – it appears peaceful, but one must remember that evolution is reliant on the method “survival of the fittest.”
Sun. Nov. 23rd: reVelation is a spiritual or intellectual path to change, an enlightenment or idea that strikes out of the blue – a spontaneous, and sudden transition that entirely shifts world views and methods of interaction.
Three varying reasons for profound change in the world.
We will be showcasing fashion collections, artworks, short films, performances and musical acts that loosely speak to this cyclical narrative – we urge you to attend, dress to your interpretation of each theme and join us for a weekend of spectacular revelry!
